Crochet Directions

CROCHET HOOK: USA Size ‘K’
MATERIAL: choice (medium to heavy weight worsted, homespun, etc.)
NOTE: crocheting typically uses more yarn than knitting; it is suggested that skeins of the same “dye
lot” be purchased to complete a piece
as similar material of differing dye lots may vary slightly in color or texture (MOST NOTABLE when
interspersed within a single created piece)
[acrylic mixtures for ease of care & handling are suggested]
requires 15-18oz. material/finished piece

To begin…

CHAIN [in multiples of 3 for trinity] – at least 48 stitches (approx. 18”-19” width) or desired width of
shawl, + CHAIN 1 more
SINGLE CROCHET (sc) back into beginning chains: start with second chain from hook and each
stitch--including very 1st chain made [count: 48 stitches, then CHAIN 3 (will represent 1st double
crochet in next row) and TURN
Ongoing pattern…
*DOUBLE CROCHET (dc) in 2nd chain from hook, then each stitch to end—last dc will be in 3rd ch of
succeeding row (check row count: 48 stitches) then chain 3 & TURN [Repeat “*” row 2 more times for
total of three rows of dc]; then ch 1 & TURN
**SINGLE CROCHET in each stitch of succeeding row to end—last sc of 1st row in each series will be
in 3rd chain of succeeding row (check count: 48 stitches), chain 1 and TURN [repeat “**” row two more
times for total of three rows of sc],
at end of series chain 3, TURN –alternate: 3row dc series/3row sc series

REPEAT PATTERN TO DESIRED LENGTH OF SHAWL BODY [65” to 68” shawl body recommended]

To end crochet…after desired length (preferably, after last series of 3 rows dc), sc one row. Bind off.

To Complete the shawl:

Choices for finish:
 Single crochet (sc) around entire shawl with body color or contrasting color of material (can lend
finishing touch and/or
draw elements of shawl together)
 Finish with fringe as desired [3” fringe recommended, requires 6” pieces of material/folded in half &
looped thru]

Knit (crochet) until the piece measures from wrist to wrist, minimum of approximately 57-58"
(Knitting: bind off with a knit row; Crocheting: end with row of single crochet).

TIPS/SUGGESTIONS FOR FRINGE:

(visit website: www.shawlministry.com for visual suggestion for placement & make-up)

        IF DYE LOT CHANGE IS NECESSARY--utilize the “changed lot number” material for fringe
        LEFTOVER MATERIAL (after shawl body is completed or ??choose to make fringe before
beginning the last skein)
If amount of material leftover is limited…divide the material equally for 4-corners and slip knot to each
corner.
        YARN MANUFACTURED “LOOSELY WOUND”--knot the ends of the fringe (to keep it from
unraveling)
